I enjoyed this. Good information. A history of Buddhism. Not all "new age" weird. The names of places and individuals were hard to keep track of, like the Old Testament. I went on Wikipedia and got a list/cheat sheet.

As a Buddhist student/practitioner for over 40 years, I was a bit surprised to read such a scathing review from an intelligent, eloquent reviewer,Howard Burchfield. I can only make a guess as to why the reviewer had what would be characterized as an "aversive" response. I know Jack Kornfield's work quite well and I believe that his teaching embodies the essence of Buddhism as I understand it. I am not an enlightened being so my response is limited by my less than perfect understanding, so please take this in to account. Dr. Kornfield does not spend a great deal of time focusing on the cultural trappings or ritualistic aspects. Instead he provides a clear description of the spiritual, as opposed to religious essence of the Dharma.The scholars in the audience may wince at his liberal inclusion of Sufi, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Taoist, (etc.) wisdom, but I cherish it. I think that truth transcends borders/language/culture and that at the core of Buddhism there are universal truths that can be found in all aspects of the human experience. To denigrate this as "New Age spirituality" or Californian Buddhism" is, in my opinion, a misreading of the Buddha's teaching. Certainly, he had a fondness for organization ( lists, rules, nomenclature, and so forth) but this was only to serve the greater purpose of awakening. This is what I hear in this audio series; a desire for all being to awaken to the ultimate nature of reality. If you are considering exploring Buddhism, I highly recommend these recordings as a wonderful introduction.

This is the first book about Buddhist psychology I’ve read, and I enjoyed it. His voice is pretty monotone and put my boyfriend to sleep, but I enjoyed listening to it during a long drive. I took it as a good sign when he quoted so many writers I love (Rumi, Viktor Frankl, Langston Hughes) in the first few chapters. The ideas were well conveyed (definitely geared towards beginners) and interesting.

Jack Kornfield is an excellent teacher of metaphysics. He weaves the reader through the teachings of Buddhist Psychology like an artist uncovering an image that cannot be seen apart from an inner vision revealing itself. He illuminates these teachings in practical ways that are easily used in daily life. -- Samuel Oliver, author of, WHAT THE DYING TEACH US: LESSONS ON LIVING.

Admittedly, this is entitled "The Roots..." so it's pretty basic--mostly Theravada per Kornfield's training/master but including some Mahayana. He's very calm & soft voiced, which strangely I found annoying. It seems very "Feeler" oriented from a Myers-Briggs/Jungian perspective. There isn't much new or profound but it might be good as a starter--on the other hand his very fine book "A Path with Heart" is much better. I'd also recommend the works of Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron such as "Taming the Mind" & "Working with Anger."

If you like your history intertwined with interesting local facts and figures, strategic events, and general trivia woven together with a sly humor and insight, you'll enjoy this book.

I’m not a bourbon drinker, myself. Bourbon was my late grandfather’s drink, the one who fought WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps and then raised three children in a wholesome Midwestern town. I’m about as likely to order a Jim Beam on the rocks as I am to fly missions over the Ruhr Valley, or eat TV dinners while watching reruns of M*A*S*H. Which is to say, not very likely.So it was a pleasant surprise to enjoy this book so much. That’s because Bourbon Empire is not just a history of bourbon, it’s a history of America. With a keen eye for a good story, and prose so good you’ll find yourself reading it twice, Reid Mitenbuler goes beyond the rough and ready frontier folk whose names have been pasted on the bottles apocryphally to tell his readers the truth about America’s founding drunkards, plucky immigrants, ruthless capitalists, earnest reformers, Prohibition-era bootleggers, Madison Avenue bamboozlers, and modern-day chemists in lab coats.Unabashed five stars. All my friends are getting Bourbon Empire for Father’s Day. I only wish Grandpa could have read this book.

First, you definitely need a glass of bourbon in hand while you read this review, let alone the book.Spectacular history of bourbon in the US. Mr Mitenbuler not only analyzes most brands and their lineage, but also focuses on the movers and shakers that made American bourbon what it is today, for better or worse. For example, I didn't even know that Old Crow used to be a high end bourbon in the mid-1900s. It's simply amazing to read how many bourbons rose to prominence then just as suddenly fell out of favor, and which ones rose from the ashes in present day. As bourbon has now seen a resurgence in popularity, I'd highly recommend picking up, if not at least to have some cool facts to bring with you next time you go to the bar. Just don't be that guy who goes overboard and will only drink Pappy Van Winkle.

Mr. Mitenbuler's book deserves a space on the shelves of history lovers as well as bourbon lovers. It does not just repeat the popular history of American whiskey; rather it adds detail, context, and perspective to an important contributor in the development of the American economy. His Acknowledgements section, Bibliography, and parts of several chapters give credit to other authors well-known to the community of American whiskey enthusiasts because they rely on historical research rather than folklore (and advertising copy) to tell the story of Bourbon. I liked Mr. Mitenbuler's somewhat novel approach - he tells the story of bourbon by telling the story of the economic development of the U.S. with a focus on how bourbon, and other American whiskeys, contributed to that growth rather than focusing just on the growth of bourbon. It certainly deserves to be included with the half-dozen or so definitive works on bourbon which is why I bought the hard copy AND the Kindle version. It looks really nice with those other six or so books, each of which is special in its own way. And each of which has been read more than once. Way more.

Bourbon Empire will clearly be lauded by bourbon experts, but for the rest of us, I think the book offers something deeper - a perspective on American history that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. Bourbon Empire is thought-provoking, well-researched, and unexpectedly, downright hilarious at times. The book reminds us that reality is often far more interesting than fiction, and it adeptly carries the reader on a journey from the backwoods of American history right up to the shelf at your present-day local liquor store. While the entire book was excellent, I particularly enjoyed the attention given to bourbon's place in colonial history through the civil war - where information is not quite so easy to find or piece together in an engaging fashion such as the author has done here. Overall, Bourbon Empire is a must-read because of the sheer knowledge it conveys as well as its value as a unique and entertaining angle on American history and culture.

The author steadily declines. The books starts out engaging in a way that brings history to life. But somewhere about half way through, it becomes steadily becomes more and more jumbled and confusing, with the author dropping names and personal “insight” that takes from his writing. Sadly, I gave up about 3/4 through.I bought new, and would make a different choice if I had a do over. But if you get a good used copy, the first half is well worth it.

Highly informative history of bourbon and its place in American culture. Fascinating and valuable insights into recent and current production and marketing aspects of the bourbon industry. Well-researched and revelatory. Whether you're new to bourbon or a long-standing devotee, you'll find this a worthwhile investment of time that will make you a more selective shopper and consumer.

While this book does get a little tedious at times, it's a fairly fast read and gives you a ton of information about how bourbon grew up in the United States. It also gives you a lot to think about as a bourbon drinker. I first picked it up when I read an excerpt where the author was talking about the dubious value of small, craft bourbons versus some of the products distilled at the larger companies. Just goes to show that small is not always better. It also gave me a few names to search for in the liquor store!

About the Author

Professor Emeritus Geoffrey A. Cordell obtained his Ph.D. in synthetic natural product chemistry at the University of Manchester in 1970. After two years as a NATO postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Chemistry, M.I.T., he joined the College of Pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). A Professor since 1980, he served as a Department Head for 12 years and as Interim Dean of the College of Pharmacy for almost three years, as well as holding several other senior academic and research administrative positions at the Department, College, and Campus levels. He was the Co-founder of the US - Thai Consortium for Pharmacy Education, which developed and trained faculty for six new schools of pharmacy in Thailand. He retired from the University of Illinois in 2007. Since 1983, he has served as President of Natural Products Inc., a consulting company. He is the author of about 600 research publications, book chapters, comprehensive reviews and professional publications; is the author of two books, with three more in progress; the editor of 37 books, including 29 volumes in the series “The Alkaloids: Chemistry and Biology”; is Associate Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines; and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of 26 international scientific journals. He is a former President of the American Society of Pharmacognosy, and is also an Honorary Member. In 1981, he was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the University of Munich with Professor Hildebert Wagner. He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Chemical Society, the Linnean Society of London, the American Society of Pharmacognosy, and the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. In addition to assisting international organizations and corporations in several countries around the world to develop their research and academic programs, he is an Honorary Professor at Sichuan University, Chengdu, China; and at Amity University, Noida, India. He is also a Visiting Professor at universities in Peru, Malaysia, and Brasil, and an International Collaborative Partner of the UTAR Global Research Network in Malaysia in the areas of biodiversity and cancer. In addition, he is a member of the International Advisory Board of several natural product research institutes. His interests include the chemistry and biosynthesis of alkaloids, the sustainability and quality control of medicinal agents, the remote detection of biologically active natural products, and the use of vegetables as chemical reagents.

Susan Senator is a writer, activist, and the mother of three boys. Her books include Making Peace with Autism, and The Autism Mom’s Survival Guide. Her twenty-five-year-old son, Nat, was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, and she has been advocating for people with autism ever since. She lives in Brookline, Massachusetts.

The book includes sections on housing, caregivers, the range of needs, heath and safety, and letting go. She provides strategies for preparing for autism adulthood and advises parents to start early, do research, and reach out to friends, associates, and professionals. She shares her experiences in order to make the transition easier for families who follow. Families of children in middle school and high school should read this book so they can prepare for their children's aging out of the school system. Includes lots of tips and resources to get started.

Susan Senator is an autism parent who has fought in the trenches for services for her son Nat and has lived to tell us about it, several times. Autism Adulthood is essential reading as Ms. Senator provides us with blueprints and advice in providing for the futures of our special needs children. The work is complicated, but not impossible as she describes her's and the advocacy of other parents. She answers the questions special needs parents have in a very straightforward way. I bought two copies, one for myself and one for my son's mother as we struggle to come up with a plan for our now teenage son's life.

Helping your autistic child transition to adulthood is complicated and challenging, and far too few books have been written about it. Susan tackles the big, scary issues with her trademark warmth and wisdom. Whether she’s writing about employment, healthcare, housing, care-givers, siblings, or the intricacies of navigating governmental agencies, Susan offers realistic, practical, and reassuring advice. Her chapter on health and safety issues alone is worth the price of the book. Indispensable and engagingly written, “Autism Adulthood” is essential reading on how to give young autistic adults their best chance at living happy, safe, and fulfilling lives.

I wish that I had a book like this 25 years ago. Excellent compendium of advice. I think that she is one of the best lay people writing in the field of the autism spectrum today. HIghly recommend this book to anyone with autism, and family and friends, or anyone who needs to know more.

This was an excellent read. The overview of programs for autistic adults around the country was very helpful. The author clearly hit all the important points- the highs and the lows that parents are faced with in making life long decisions about their loved ones futures after they are no longer around.This is a valuable text for all parents to have and to own.

This book is written from the heart! Susan Senator does a great job of finding or looking for answers we all ask ourselves about the now and future of our children with ASD! I have a 30yr.old son with ASD! its not easy, having this book makes you feel not alone, and gives you confidence with sense of humor, makes everything better. It gave me tips and strategies, from Meds. to housing... My son Alex read some chapters himself and softly said, Mom this is me! She knows me!

This book is filled with practical advice and "war stories". I picked it up from our local library. After taking over 15 photos of informational pages in the 84 pages I realized it is a book worth buying! I've invited 8 moms for a bookclub like get together. First time I have even thought of having a bookclub!
