This is a classic reprint of a book written by Ebenezer Peirce and published by Zerviah Gould Mitchell in 1878. Zerviah Mitchell is a seventh generation descendant of Massasoit through his daughter, Amie, and she wrote the forward to the book. The book is mainly about King Philip's War, which engulfed New England in 1675-6 with the uprising led by Metacom "King Philip", one of Massasoit's sons. The author, Ebenezer Peirce, was a lieutenant colonel in the 3rd Regiment of the Massachusetts Militia, and he did a lot of research on this conflict, which took place two-hundred years before his time. He includes many lists of names of those who served in the regiments and companies that were involved in this war. Most people would probably skip over those lists of names, but given all of my ancestry that was in New England at the time of this war, I found the detail to be very valuable in identifying the roles that were played by a number of my ancestors in that conflict. He also writes about Metacom's chief captains, Canonchet, Quinnapin, Pumham, Tuspaquin, and Annawon. Two of these, Quinnapin and Tuspaquin were Metacom's brother's in law. I felt that I learned a lot about the dynamics of this conflict and appreciated the fact that the author made use of many sources of information from the time period that this war took place.

I'm a native of the southern Massachusetts area and have always been interested in the King Phillip War and the history of the Wampanoag tribe. I went into this wanting to know, "why was King Phillip so pissed off"? It certainly answered all my questions and more. Extreemely interesting. It also covers the complete story of the Pilgrims, the Plymouth Bay colony beginnings and history of the Mass Bay colony and surrounding tribes. I also recommend reading THE NARRATIVE OF THE CAPTIVITY AND RESTORATION OF MRS. MARY ROWLANDSON as a companion piece.

The author answers the old question, " Why doesn't God answer our prayers?
