About the Author

Margaret Landon first became interested in Anna Leonowens' story, when a friend recommended to her The English Governess at the Siamese Court which was published in 1870. Fascinated with the story and its potential, she contacted one of Anna's grandchildren, and in 1941 began to seriously research writing an updated (and vastly more entertaining) version of the book. Anna and the King is the product of her efforts.

For a small bit of history of Siam, this is a good book. I don't know much about the facts, having read the preface, but for all the other information that may be true, it is truly a wonderful book.Anna loved her husband dearly and never remarried, but I believe just a tiny bit of the movie that she and the King developed a closer bond of friendship than most friends of today. The love and devotion she had with her pupils was quite obvious, as well as the animosity between herself and the horrid translator. The many relationships with the women of the harem were complex, at the same time, simple. Lady Thiang was a rare soul, able to love so devoutly, yet recognise the human, or perhaps not so quite human at times, the failings of her husband. To remain devoted to someone like that, with his many violent outbursts of anger and not fear him totally, is very uncommon.Anna's influence on Prince Chulalongkorn just have made her proud of her decision to stay when times were the most difficult. I also believe she must have felt some relief, that her many years there has made such an impression on the young boy.All in all, this is one book I'm glad I bought. I read it when I was much younger, cried in spots, got angry in others, and signed with relief when situations resolved successfully. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes history, a few love stories, much conflict, and exciting, tense moments. Anna and the King of Siam will remain a favourite of mine. I'm truly glad it's on my Fire, so I can re-read it whenever I feel the need to travel without leaving my own home.

The tragedy of this book is that it was turned into a classic film. On its own merits, the book is interesting, informative and entertaining. But we have seen the film so often, with its dramatization of the main points, the music and the characters, that the book falls a bit flat by comparison. It's a pity, as the books shades in the characters far more fully, and is far more realistic than the dramatisation. It must have been a sensation at the time of publishing, but from this vantage-point it was a bit of a yawn.

I had always hoped to one day read the book upon which the Musical, "The King & I" was originally based. I am delighted to share that my wish has been granted and I have completed this lengthy, detailed missive, based on the journals of Anna Leonowens herself. Since many of.the characters of the musical came from this book, you will enjoy knowing that much of the story will be familiar to you. Alas, the king is no Yul Brynner in the real story, but a vain and brutally demanding regent. But Anna is true, in every respect, and her influence on the young Prince Chulalonghorn leads to great changes in Siamese cultural practice. Do find the time to read this book. You will learn much history of the area in the process, and be very satisfied by the story's end. A+ Bravo!

I am writing a paper on Rogers and Hammerstein and decided that I needed the background books for the 4 musicals I planned to focus on. This was not just amazing but tragic. It makes me think about the King and I in a whole new way, and for that reason not possible for me to focus on it in my paper. This book is super and I hope it stays in print.

This is a beautiful story. I saw the movie, a few weeks ago, the one I had seen sometime about 40 years ago acting Deborah Kerr and Yul Bryner, and I decided to see if there was a book about it. I found it, thanks, to you and I am delighted. Thank you so much.

I really enjoyed this book! It gave a more in depth character development for when I watch "The King and I" and "Anna and the King" whih are both fantastic movie adaptions of this book!

The book is in excellent shape and I'm looking forward to reading the book.

This classic narrative is an eye-opener to the actual characters we only have known from the musical, "The King and I." It was heartening to see the tremendous effects of Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation on the Siamese government.

Review

"John Tolan sets aside the historical Muhammad and Muslim portraits of God's beloved Messenger to focus on Mahomet as European men have depicted him over the centuries. He shows how wildly varied versions of Islam's prophet emerge and how they make sense within their own social, intellectual, and theological contexts. Nuanced and fascinating, Faces of Muhammad is a terrific read."--Kecia Ali, author of The Lives of Muhammad"John Tolan is the preeminent authority on European views of Islam. No living scholar is more qualified to attempt such an ambitious project. This book represents a milestone in the field."--Hussein Fancy, University of Michigan"A book of great interest, Faces of Muhammad makes utterly clear that there is no single, monolithic view of Muhammad in European culture but rather a wide spectrum of views."--Thomas E. Burman, University of Notre Dame

“The rare work of fiction that has changed real life . . . Because its heroine dares to be her unique and spirited self, despite society’s biases about class and sexuality, Rubyfruit Jungle has helped generations of readers to do the same. I found myself laughing hysterically, then sobbing uncontrollably just moments later.”—The Boston Globe  “You can’t fully know—or enjoy—how much the world has changed without reading this truly wonderful book.”—Andrew Tobias, author of The Best Little Boy in the World   “A crass and hilarious slice of growing up ‘different,’ as fun to read today as it was in 1973.”—The Rumpus   “Molly Bolt is a genuine descendant—genuine female descendant—of Huckleberry Finn. And Rita Mae Brown is, like Mark Twain, a serious writer who gets her messages across through laughter.”—Donna E. Shalala“A trailblazing literary coup at publication . . . It was the right book at the right time.”—Lee Lynch, author of Beggar of Love

I liked this book and its flinty protagonist, Molly. She's sassy, independent, and she doesn't take any crap from anybody. Her adventures in Florida and the Big Apple are picaresque and well-drawn---and man, does this gal know how to wreak revenge. Her pranks and antics had me rolling in the aisles. So I admire her brio, her bravura, and dare I say it---her balls. What I dislike: she's just too conceited. Her head is so big that she couldn't fit through a doorway and her mouth so outsized she could eat a banana sideways. After awhile, I tired of hearing about her academic and athletic prowess, her dark beauty, and her sculpted, muscular body. Also, it's more interesting when a character has some kind of personal arc. I know this is a memoir, but Molly starts out rock hard and stays that way: never is she troubled in the least by doubt or uncertainty. Victims are boring, but so are the overconfident and cocksure. In addition, Brown's writing is not that strong. The tenses waver and the grammar is sketchy. Still, I recommend this coming of age memoir, because Brown is a entertaining and wicked wit.

I first heard of this book & author from one of my all-time fave movies, " Educating Rita". It was written in the early 70's and for those times would not be in a high school library, nowadays probably considered quite tame, even the norm. Molly is an illegitimate child raised by her vindictive aunt Carrie & kind uncle Carl. It chronicles her from 7 y.o. Until early adulthood when sheLands in New York City. Molly is s lesbian as is real-life author, Rita Mae Brown. Molly is a force to reckoned with she has all the odds stacked against her & every reason to fail, but through her fierce determination & hard times she always seems to survive & beat the odds . She speaks her mind, even to the point of getting a beating for it. She isn't a pleaser and lives life on her own terms. It was so good I literally finished half the book the first day. Definitely a piece of history & in some courses, required reading. Do yourself a favor & buy this gem & be ready to be sweetly surprised. Very progressive for it's time, too!

I understand that the book is important for having addressed lesbianism and feminism at a time when those subjects were not much discussed. In that sense, it's a groundbreaking book, and I respect that, On the other hand, I simply did not like the protagonist, Molly. She is extremely scornful of those who do not share her own views about what is and is not a worthwhile life, and she can be truly cruel at times. She's is simply not someone I would want to spend time with.

As a straight male reader, I found this to be a fascinating coming of age novel and a glimpse of what it was like growing up as a lesbian a generation or so ago. More than that, though, it's a very compelling story about a person who insists on being herself in spite of the pressure put on her by just about everyone she encounters. If there were more people with such a strong sense of individuality in this world, we'd probably have a much easier time accepting one another for who we are--we'd have no choice.

I love a good light weight paperback that you can carry in your purse wherever you go! This book was a very easy read. Only took me about 3 days without having to force myself. I'm not a big reader, so that's a big deal. It was entertaining, and SURPRISINGLY sensitive for the the year that it was written. The N word pops up about 2-3 times, but it's always by some racist that you're supposed to hate. I was expecting race and gender to be handled very poorly, but I was pleasantly surprised how sensitive the book was. One slip up: I always hate it when brown people's skin is described using lattes and food, but for the year it was written, I can overlook that particular shortcoming. Strongly recommend it!

Read this when it was first published and adored it. At the time I was asked how I could like a lesbian book and was asked if I was secretly gay. REALLY. I don't know what made me think of it again but as a 65y/o I believe I got ever more from it this time. I loved molly then and now. I wished then and I was more like her and now happy that I have more of molly in me. Still not gay but still a lover of fabulous women. Fiction or non fiction. Thank you Rita Mae for Molly and Dolly. Can't wait to start six of one, bingo and loose lips.

Definitely radical when it was first published. The book was recommended, and it was kind of what I expected. It took real bravery to write this type of book, and Molly is an incredible character. She is a little adult, completely herself, absolutely fearless, and I think it's amazing. She does the impossible because of her indomitable spirit. Her father, Carl, truly loves her, and encourages her, despite her mother's fear and ignorance. Molly will not be defeated, regardless of being challenged at a nativity play, or confronted by a principal, or the dean of women. She soars - breezing through high school, thriving in college despite her lackadaisical roommate, forcing her way through New York. I like the end. It's not her mother, Carrie's revelation, so much as Molly's recognition of what Carrie went through that is most poignant, and despite all that toughness and meanness, Carrie loves Molly. I like this book, and though Molly is admirable, I didn't always like her. Still, it was a pleasure to read.

Full of great laughs and touching queer solidarity. I’ll always thank my friend for having brought this book to my attention. If you’re looking for reckless and unashamed affirmation, you’ll find it here.

“I don't think I've ever seen a book to teach Indian cooking in a systematic way. It's about time we've had one and this one is a humdinger….What makes this a teaching book and not just a doorstop is the reference materials. Essays on regional food ways are fascinating…I could sit and read this book all day!” (T. Susan Chang The Level Teaspoon podcast)“As Monisha Bharadwaj teaches Westerners to prepare the cuisine of her native India, her background as a scholar of the country's history always helps drive the lessons. . . . It's an approach that Bharadwaj follows at her London-based cooking school and in her comprehensive new book. . . . Across nearly 500 pages, she introduces readers to the stories, traditions, and geographical differences that define Indian cuisine. “ ―Michael Floreak, The Boston Globe (Michael Floreak The Boston Globe)Here we have the best ― and maybe the only ― book currently aiming to teach Indian cooking in a systematic way. (Author Monisha Bharadwaj runs an Indian cooking school in London.) Just as you'd expect, The Indian Cooking Course has recipes for rice, dals, vegetables, meats, chutneys, flatbreads, vindaloos, kormas and samosas. But it's not just recipes; the reference material goes wide and deep, from colorful street shots and essays on regional foodways to step-by-step demo photos and instructions. The package is equally lyrical and technical, and a pleasure to use. (NPR, Guide to 2016's Great Reads)

This is a very good, but not great, introduction to Indian cooking. It is clearly laid out, with gorgeous photography and a ton of recipes. However, often, the pictures are not labeled with which of the several recipes on the facing page is pictured. Ingredients might be challenging for some to locate, if there isn't a good Indian market nearby (Amazon has a lot of spices, but some of the fresh ingredients are harder to source). The author is also sometimes casual with steps and ingredient amounts which will be a challenge to less experienced cooks. For instance, the author never gives salt amounts ("season to taste"), and does not have a specific base recipe for garlic ginger paste (noting only a two to one ratio of garlic to ginger). One roti recipe calls for 3-5oz of water to create a thick, pourable batter. That ended up being nowhere near enough water to create the right consistency. Similarly, another recipe called for sauteing onions over high heat, stirring in the other ingredients, then adding a "few tablespoons" of water and allowing to cook for 15-20 minutes. Someone following this recipe exactly would end up with some pretty burnt curry, but a more experience cook would realize that they had to turn down the heat and keep stirring. The recipes I have cooked so far have all been wonderful, despite these obstacles. In all, a very good introduction to Indian cooking and a beautiful book, but not for someone who isn't already comfortable in the kitchen.

Excellent "How To" for Indian cooking; the best of the many I own, including some that I love, including Yamuna Devi's The Art of Indian Vegetarian Cooking, or Julie Sahni Classic Indian Cooking, or some of the many by Madhur Jaffrey. Monisha presents a broad array of standard western-known Indian dishes- nothing esoteric, little new, hardly exotic, but the most clear book in explaining the basics, which allows you to have an "ordered" understanding of what Indian dishes are about.I'd love for her to come up with a volume two, teaching - as clearly and well as in this book - new, more exotic recipes accesible to the west (mostly vegetarian please:)

Very nice book. Well laid out. Pictures are wonderful. Good Balance of information and recipes. Been able to try a few recipes and they were easy to prepare and came out very good. It does call for traditional Indian spices that may not be available from your local supermarket. I have a Indian store by me and was able to find all the ingredients in the book.

Really good cookbook.I've been cooking for a long time, 40 years or so, and have been cooking Indian food for several years, so there wasn't a lot in here that was completely new to me. What I liked about the book was that it explained why you do certain things, rather than just telling you to do them. The Master Classes are great, they are in-depth explanations of how to prepare certain dishes. This was helpful to me by explaining how to prepare more complex recipes that I've never tried, like stuffed parathas. I also enjoyed the cultural and regional references, but that's not the main reason I bought the book.Another plus is that the book is bound exceptionally well. It will actually lie flat when you open it.

This is probably one of my most wish listed book about Indian Cuisine. I love how this cookbook was written because I love how exotic and unique locations have their own food history, origins, cultures, traditions, and what people frequently ate. Then the author explains how religion, cultures, the availability of spices, herbs, and other key ingredients came to be in those regions of India. So I would say they do have a melting pot of Punjabs, Nawabs, Afghans, Hindus and other Buddhist Sects, British, Dutch and other Asian influences in food. This is one cookbook you should have in your kitchen library. Well, this is a Kindle version and they have this introductory deal = $0.99. When I saw the price, is this for real?! I bought this version which is perfect. Yes, they are tons of recipes but I have the background information how Indians home cooks and other chefs cook. Way too awesome! The chapters are divided into 15 categories (Rice, Flours, Meat, Poultry, Fish & Seafood, Eggs, Dairy, Lentils & Beans, Vegetables, Snacks Sides & Street Food, Grilled Foods, Salad & Raitas, Chutneys Pickles & Relishes, Desserts & Drinks). Each of the chapters have 15 or more recipes. It also includes a food history, what and why it came to be found In Indian Cuisine. I think this an excellent and fantastic cookbook to collect, cook with and get you to get cooking authentic Indian food at your home. I would say this is for the intermediate, advanced home cooks, chefs and those who want to go discover what Indian food is all about. Great photographs, visually appealing dishes, awesome stories from the author about each dish makes me start cooking these recipes and makes my mouth water (food curiosity kicks in).I learned a lot from this book about Indian cuisine, and the ingredients involved in the recipes. This price deal won't last long and may go up based on its e-book format.

First off, I love this book. I have made about 20 dishes from it, and all but one has been delicious. Since I live in a smaller city without a large Indian population, this book has helped us have Indian meals far tastier and more varied than what is offered in our restaurants. I used to think all Indian food tasted similar, but not so.The reason I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars is it is often unclear. For example, the recipe with say to fry the food in a sturdy pan--what kind of pan? A skillet? A Dutch oven? I end up making my own judgments and it's been fine, but I think the recipes should be clearer. That goes for adding "some water" etc as well. It has all worked out, but I am often unfamiliar with the target dish, so very accurate instructions would be better. Still highly recommended, though.
