Fantastically readable and intriguing book about the marshlands of Iraq and the Arabs who inhabited them, living in an aquatic manner (and operating a water-based economy) quite unlike the arid lands/desert lifestyle usually associated with Middle East Arabs. Unfortunately, Saddam Hussein drained most of these marshes because he knew the inhabitants would not bend to the ways of modern Iraq unless their water was taken away. Thankfully, we have the remarkable Wilfrid Thesiger to tell us about those days.Interesting companion reading (and more customary of what we think of as "Arabia"): ARABIAN SANDS, also by Wilfrid Thesiger.Arabian Sands (Penguin Classics).

What a delightful read. Thesiger lived among the marsh Madan of Iraq several months of each year between 1951 to 1958. As he traveled thru the marshes by boat, he introduces the reader to the many friends he made and to the culture of a people he came to love. Since the marshes were drained to make way for "progress" and prosperity, this forgotten world is no more.

An excellent read; the writing style is both descriptive and engaging, and the story itself fascinating. The book includes over a hundred photographic plates which augment the story tremendously, especially for the amazing reed mudhifs which are frequently the setting. (The photos and more can be found in the Pitt Rivers Museum collection).I have not yet read Arabian Sands but reviews of that earlier work complained about Thesiger's primitivism and romanticization of the Bedouin - I didn't see much of that in this book, only shades, and overall the telling is fairly forthright and balanced. Clearly Thesiger is no fan of modernization, but relative to the conditions in more urban Iraq at the time, there are no clear "rights" or "wrongs" on this position. In any event, it doesn't get in the way of the narrative, which captures a disappearing culture in rich depth and perspective.

This book, like Arabian Sands, captures the essence of a culture that is long lost. Thesiger had a knack for totally immersing himself into the lives of the people he chose to live among. As a result, we get a real feel for those lives. This is great, old time escapism.

Wilfred is long gone; but his books last forever. He takes us into a little-known corner of the world and does it well. Saddam Hussein drained these marshes, but you can visit them in this book.

Not up to Arabian sands standards

It can be described as ' The Duty Of Practical Godliness';Baxter also gives us this-"...to walk in obedience and fear of God... is the principle thing in our 'Walking With God'." I think Mr.Baxter's 'Walking With God' is a manual for 'Practical Christian Living'.If atheism can be considered the highest degree of wickedness(living as if God did not exist,and wishing and desiring it to be so)then being devoted to God,living in God's presence and acknowledging Him 'In All Things',would be the antithesis of atheism.That there is a high degree of atheism in our day and also was in Baxter's day,would be hard to refute(not necessarily those who outwardly and boldly declare such)but heart atheism which the author describes thus-"when there is nothing of God upon the heart,no love,no fear,no trust,no subjection,this is heart atheism." He also labels those as atheists,who profess to know God but by their works deny him.I think it would be common to label such as hypocrites,does not hypocrisy fall under the umbrella of atheism.One thing I've long appreciated about 'The Legacy Of The Puritans' is their wholehearted,uncompromising devotion to God.This mindset is filtered throughout their writings and this is abundantly evident in the godly Pastor Baxter's writings-"...man's chiefest business in the world is with God,and that our thoughts,and all of our powers,are made to be employed upon him,or for him... ."The most helpful things that I've read on 'The Thought Life' have been by Puritan writers-The Vanity Of Thoughts-Thomas Goodwin and The Sinfulness And Cure Of Thoughts-Stephen Charnock.I had not read anything by Baxter on 'The Thought Life' before reading a section of this book,which has an extraordinary contribution in that area.Anyone who has read anything Mr.Baxter has written,will have some idea of how searching his preaching and written ministry are(even compared to a number of his Puritan brethren).I want to give a few quotes of his on 'The Thought Life' to help support this assertion-"There is nothing but darkness in all my thoughts if God be not in them.""You murder the creature by separating it from God who is its life,and then you are enamored at the carcass..."."If God be not in all your thoughts,they are all in vain.""The thoughts are the most constant actions of a man,and therefore most of the man is in them."Baxter's section in this book on 'The Thought Life' are worthy of not just a careful and prayerful reading but of serious ongoing meditation.I strongly believe that such an undertaking,with the Lord's blessing,can be life transforming.In expounding the nature of 'Walking With God' here are the godly Pastor's main points;that one's walk with God-1.Must be with the greatest reverence-which could also be called 'godly fear'.2.It must be with humble boldness and familiarity-If one is reconciled to God,this brings God near to them,which makes the familiarity with him possible.3.It is with holy pleasure and delight-we were once enemies of God but we are no longer,we long to know his presence in greater measure because we delight in Him(prior to conversion there is enmity,fear and hatred of God,because we are far from him).4.Walking with God must include industry and diligence,our Lord rewards those who diligently seek him.5.To walk with God is a matter of constancy-It is not an occasional or haphazard,but ought to be the normal course of our lives.I am convinced that Richard Baxter's writings on 'Practical Christianity' are in the front rank of the Puritans.That is a bold assertion because in general they were 'Master Physicians Of The Soul'.

I started with an old copy and when it didn't work, I contacted the author and he personally steered me to the updated edition. He left several worthwhile exercises [beginning stuff] out of the newer edition but it gives you a working start of php and mysql and how full blown application can be developed through function libraries. Very good and his applications really work.My only complaint was that he doesn't take you through the steps to create a modern day site with login and administration type functions as Larry Ullman's book do.

Purchased as a texbook for a course in elementary-level web development. I bought this book new, but the included CD (seal unbroken) was for a completely different book from the year 2007! Not a disaster, as the software is open source and can be downloaded from elsewhere, but this inconvenience, combined with the mediocre content and the status of PHP 6 between versions 5 and 7 make this book one of my more unfortunate purchases. As a general, elementary introduction to PHP, I suppose the modest price makes it a reasonable option, but there are surely many better books out there!

The book was okie, but lacked good examples and workable practice problems.

"For the absolute beginner"? I think not. "No experience required," that's what it says on the cover, but even with some previous experience with web design (HTML and CSS) and programming (C++), this book was not what I expected for a beginner. The author tends to use terms and symbols for pages at a time before explaining what they mean. Each chapter revolves around a specific example, but unless you're trying to do something exactly like that, it's hard to see how the information can be transfered to another application.If you really want to learn PHP, get the O'Reilly book. It's clear and well-organized. I know because I kept referring to O'Reilly when trying to figure out what the Harris book was saying. Calling it a book for intermediate users would be more accurate, but it still doesn't measure up to O'Reilly.

This book's title is a bit misleading. If you are not already very well versed in HTML or XHTML coding, you will need to wait before buying this book. The only "absolute Beginner" he is apparently referring to are beginners at Database, MySQL and PHP programming. You will not learn how to create, manage or troubleshoot a database system with this until you are already skilled at HTML coding. Once you are, then I "presume" this book may be a better value, as I had enjoyed the whole thing up to where the author states that I should be good at HTML already or take his "refresher" course.

This was an amazing book for the material and the price! The only thing I can see is that the title could be a bit misleading. And as someone learning all of thsi stuff the hard way, I can feel your pain, but...To all of the negative reviews: this is not a beginner's guide to (X)HTML/CSS or Javascript!You need an understanding of those languages before you can dive into this. This is about doing something with your pretty HTML/CSS web pages, that maybe pretty and well designed... can't really do much of anything.Like posting a high score for a game you created w Flash or Java. Or are trying to see who is visiting your site, and would want to respond to your viewers with an e-mail. If you are at this level, then this is the book for you!

I bought this book for one of my college classes. This book does not impress me especially with a name "for the absolute beginner" because I feel this book is not for the absolute beginner. If you do not have any kind of HTML or CSS programing then this will be a hard book for you to follow.

The author writes crisply and clearly and not only objectively describes his personal journey to becoming a fighter, but skillfully incorporates historical and literary references, as well as scientific information, all of which provide added texture and information to his subjective observations. Before reading this book, I knew little about mixed martial arts, believing it to be barbaric, cruel, brutal, etc. But Josh Rosenblatt can write and he gave me a new appreciation of the sport and the sacrifices required to participate. He chronicles his transformation from a thirty something out of shape hedonist, pacifist intellectual to a man prepared to inflict and endure extreme physical and mental punishment. Why did he do this? You will have to read the book and I highly recommend it. Throughout his journey filled with personal doubts and backslides leading up to his official fight in a cage, the author educates and enlightens us with physiology and anatomy research as well as historical, literary and spiritual references. Rather than distract, these references explain why the journey was so important. The description of the months, weeks, days, hours and minutes leading up to the fight kept me reading and I could not put the book down. I look forward to reading more of this author's books.

A great read! Loved the writing. Book arrived. I picked it up in the AM and couldn’t put it down until i finished. I could care less about MWAA fighting but I loved the book! It’s more about what it means to live. Some good interesting history of boxing, history of writers relationship with boxing and history of kicking Nazi’s asses, too!

This book took swings at my reality, slowly and methodically like Poe's pendulum- with his observations on fighting cutting me, barely at first, forcing me to ask myself if I was truly living- fully experiencing all life has to offer. Then offering a rational reprieve as the pendulum swings away and he objectively took a more reasonable and rational approach to his journey. Then cutting again as he goes back to how alive fighting- and courting death and destruction- makes him feel. The suspense of the pending fight becomes greater than the fight itself, and it was a thrilling tale and exploration of what it means to be alive.

I found this book a very personal and well written exposition about growing up fearful in family that feared violence and carrying the fear with anger into adulthood.After submerging the angst with alcohol,,sex and drugs for years stumbling upon and becoming intrigued by the idea of learning martial arts and boxing as a more direct way. We follow his journey in that pursuit

I loved this book by Josh Rosenblatt.I too have pondered the question of “why we fight”.And, As a spectator, I have often wondered “why do we humans love to watch fights?” We will watch a masterful contest between two skilled fighters for sure. But really, who among us could actually turn away from a bar room brawl if it unfolded right in front of us? I appreciate the author’s honesty in describing his journey with MMA fighting. He spoke about what he learned of himself and his Jewish ancestory. He spoke about his true experiences and not what he thought others would want to hear. There was no false modesty.The author also showed an impressive knowledge of physiology and neuroanatomy.I would love to see this author do something with the history of unarmed personal comba, and the human experience.So, Josh Rosenblatt, I hope you read this☺️

25 years ago I rented the movie Vision Quest, popped it into my Panasonic VHS tape player, and immediately was captivated by the sports anti-hero Louden Swain. I went so far as to read the Terry Davis young adult novel upon which the movie was based, which John Irving called “The truest novel about growing up since Catcher in the Rye.” Ever since, I’ve been on my own vision quest to communicate the brilliance of this introspective take on the self-sacrifice and discipline of dropping weight and wrestling, as well as Louden’s soul-searching reflections on facing fears and becoming a man, to anyone who will listen. Fortunately, one friend did, and recommended I read Josh Rosenblatt’s Why We Fight, or as I think of it now, the Jewish Vision Quest.Unlike Louden, Josh Rosenblatt is an adult, and he sacrificed, trained, and even cut weight in order to fight in an MMA match as opposed to wrestling, but the insights into learning discipline, as well as the transformation that comes from facing fears and understanding what motivates us and what we are capable of are all there. For these reasons, along with Rosenblatt’s vivid, yet succinct, direct and candid writing, ‘Why We Fight’ is every bit as successful as Vision Quest.John Irving needs to read this book. It continues the coming of age, transformation-through-sport story into the life of a soft man in his 30s, writing and smoking like Holden Caulfield, dulled and stymied by fears inherited from his father. We learn poetry, science, philosophy and notably the historical Jewish dominance in Boxing—and there’s not a dull moment. I couldn’t put this book down.Rosenblatt takes us on his own vision quest to learn what he’s capable of, and his Jewishness guides this journey every step of the way. From politics to his ever-present father, Rosenblatt’s story is shaped by Jewish history—his own, as well as the terrible events of the 20th Century (and more recent terrible events in the US). While the movie Vision Quest had a Hollywood ending, Davis’ novel ends with Louden walking on to the mat to face his ultimate opponent. The outcome isn’t consequential, and similarly, ‘Why We Fight’ doesn’t end with Rosenblatt’s MMA fight; rather, it asks more questions and continues his journey of self-reflective analysis—through the fight and beyond. I very much look forward to what comes next for Josh Rosenblatt.

This book was on its way to being an excellent story until it got to a chapter that had nothing to do with the story and everything to do with the author’s ideological and political views. His sanctimonious drivel ruined the rest of the story and left me disgusted with the author.

Overall, I thought this book was really good. Definitely a really quick read. I bought it as an investor in a pest control company and while there's not anything really ground breaking in terms of ideas, the author manages to consolidate all of the key tasks that need to be focused on in order to be successful. Would have like to see some average performance indicators for more industry type stuff, but still, a great read for any small service industry businessman that is wondering why their business is struggling to get over the hump.
