I have read a ton of children's saint books, and this is my favorite. Many children's books about saints are both scary and inapplicable: this saint's eyeballs were poked out while he was being skinned alive. This may be true, but the WHY of it, the fact that saints are capable of doing this because they are so in love with the God of infinite Love, is what is most important. This book makes the lives of the saints accessible to children, and presents it with thoughtful questions and practical applications. I cannot recommend this book enough. Actually a kid's saint book written for KIDS!!
Our daughter was very surprised to received The Book of Saints as a gift from us. She loves it. It has various saints, how the saints impacted other's, and is well written. The only thing I was disappointed is to see the pictures in black and white. I would have like to have seen colored pictures. Our daughter will enjoy reading the book and so will I. I am learning much about some saint's I've never heard of.
I thought this to be a great book, one that kids can relate to w/ thoughtful questions. I'd purchase again. Written in today's language that kids can understand.
My daughter asked for a book about the saints for her 8th birthday. We have a few grownup books - Butler's Lives of the Saints and a couple others. Those were a little too much for her to sit and read - not because of her reading ability, but because they are not kid-friendly. This book was just what I was looking for. It's a thick compilation of saints. It has a hardcover and is quite durable. I like how the book is broken into sections (i.e., Saints are people who like kids, Saints are people who like to teach, etc.). I think it shows that the saints were once just regular people like us and sainthood is something that is attainable. Each saint featured has about 3-4 pages telling about his/her life in an easy, conversational manner.
I (age 24) am really enjoying this book. I wanted something easy to read to learn a little about the saints. Each saint begins with the author trying to connect with kids and relate things to their lives so they understand with everyday examples. That part can probably be glossed over by adults, but for kids, I think it's great. It segways in well and the text is never boring. One thing I've noticed, after reading several of the saints, is that they may leave out the miracles they did. For example with St. Terese Lisieux, there was a miracle of a blind girl being cured after going to her grave after her death that was not included. Everything else important seemed to be included in an easy to read way, though. Also, with Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, it left out that she made a miracle with another woman who was pregnant whose amniotic sac burst but the baby was still fine after he had 0 chance of survival. Again, this seemed to be the only important fact that was missing.I am in the middle of the third "part", and so far it seems to be grouped well. The saints' lives don't seem forced to fit into the sections such as "surprising" or "loves children." It flows well in my opinion.I just really enjoy this book. It makes learning about the saints easy and fun. I feel like I'm just reading a story, but now I'm familiar with the saints as if by magic!
My review:I am a Kids Coordinator for Couples For Christ (a Christian Family Community) and this year we started to do Kids Teachings. This book is in a story format about each Saint, about 60 of the Saints. It provides enough information to draw the Children's attention without boring them. So far we have covered St. Nicholas and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. The book is easy enough to read (I had three 8 to 10 year old read out loud) and at the end of each section there is a discussion question for the kids.PROS-price: I paid $11-simplicity: Stories provide detail but not too much info-discussion topic at the end-introduction: covers What/Who are Saints and whyCONS-not enough pictures... It would have been nice to show the kids a portrait of the SaintCONCLUSIONI highly recommend this book to any Catechist or any parent who would like to teach their child about Saints. It's a simple read and very informative.
This a very well written book that meets kids exactly where they are...with their specific issues. We finished the book and my kids wanted to read it again! I have come back to the saints we learned about in several different life circumstances to help the kids see things in new perspectives.I have recommended this book to several other parents. A great one to read!
I do like this book to read along with my 8 year old. The words are age appropriate not too hard. I probably would not recommend it for anyone younger than 8 unless it's read and explained by an adult. I assumed it had pictures and maybe shorter biographies.
