TRAPPED is Michael Northrop's entry into the YA novel category, and it is a better-than-decent first book. I started out reading his book thinking I knew how it would all turn out - and in the overall scheme of the novel, I did. But what made this story a worthy adventure was in HOW Northrop drew out the story line, telling it from the viewpoint of a 15 year old student, an aspiring member of the school basketball team, and only child of a single parent. Northrop's attention to the details which motivated his protagonist was spot on.Scotty Weem and 6 other high school students, a mixed bag of people and personalities, are trapped for 5 days at the school as a blizzard rages throughout the northeast. This was not just any blizzard, and not just any nor'easter. "It was a natural disaster in the way the earthquakes and tidal waves are natural disasters".(p.2) Of course, none of the trapped students knew this at the outset. For them, rescue was just around the corner, until at some point, maybe when the snow covered the windows of the first floor windows, it wasn't.The crew of 7 includes two freshmen girls; 2 male "outcasts," one labeled a Goth and the other, a delinquent. And 3 boys who had a long standing friendship; Scotty, Jason, and Peter. There was wariness, suspicion, and unfounded perceptions among the unwillingly formed group of teens. The 5 days spent trapped in the old school building became one worse day after another. The worst day faded as the new worst day dawned. And the dawns faded as the school was encased in 18 plus feet of snow and the windows on the first floor were covered.Food was found in the cafeteria at the cost of breaking into several locked doors and storage lockers. Peaches and chocolate pudding were the main items on the group's menu. Soon, the pipes froze making water a precious commodity. The lights failed and the battery powered backup lights soon faded leaving the kids in total darkness when they ventured off of the second floor. There was no heat, no blankets, no sanitation, and now, without lights, journeys to the cafeteria to replenish their food supply, became dangerous excursions.A fascinating observation that was beautifully executed through Scotty's musing was the effect of having no communication with the outside world. This is a group of kids with computers, ipads, cell phones, video games, texting, facebook, and a myriad of communication channels available 24-7. Suddenly they were completely disconnected from their internet world. Scotty had left his cell phone at home that day, forgotten on his dresser. Others had phones but with limited charge in each and no way to recharge them. And, unbeknownst to them, the cell tower was destroyed by the violence of the blizzard. There was no way anyone could know that they were even trapped in the high school. And once anyone would be able to navigate the outdoors again, no one would know to look for them. A fatalistic theme enters the story, slowly, but pervasive.Another compelling aspect of the plot was the relationship of the group members. Northrop presents a clear and believable picture of the inter-relationships among the members; notions and actions about one another that are both real and perceived. This is a group that never becomes a team; they do not bond, nor do heroic things for the sake of the group. In some ways, are so estranged that they d0 not even get together to use their numbers to help them survive. Even Scotty and his 2 best friends found it difficult at times to be supportive of each other. So here we have the "trapped in a crisis situation" plot and 7 teenagers with few if any survival skills or even common sense among them. The tension does build daily as one disaster after another befalls this group, making their chances of survival diminish as the days pass. We have a brilliant depiction of a group that is naive, unskilled in daily living unless it is on the internet; a group that has no interest in the other members or their survival; a group that is basically disconnected from each other, and from the world. How does this all turn out?Well, read the book - the ending is not generic nor does it result in happy days or dreams come true. Northrup continues the tension in his writing up to (and beyond, in the reader's mind) the very last page. He shows a keen understanding of teenagers as he presents this story through the eyes of Scotty Weems. He is the narrator. His observations, thoughts, and emotions, convey the unfolding of the plot in a believable manner. This is a well written book - something a young adult and even an older adult such as myself can thoroughly appreciate.I am looking forward to more such writing from Northrop as I hope he is at work on his next compelling story.

This was a fast-paced book good for the audience it was written for - probably junior high. I think young teen boys will like the book especially, with its descriptions of a shop project, some slight potty humor, a couple of referred-to boy/girl situations.I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the mega storm - made me want to put a sweater on. There were some pretty disturbing storm images discussed. This probably isn't a book you want to be reading in the middle of a blizzard. Some good character development, although rather stereotyped. There were 2-3 improbable situations over the course of the book that I don't believe would have happened in real life, one being that a group of boys would have free rein over a shop class and all its tools without a teacher being there and being told to 'lock up' on the way out - not in this day of lawsuits. But the niggling details didn't take away from the story too much. More time could have been spent on the ending, too. But all in all, a good little story. Some adults like myself will enjoy it and I think that most junior high and lower high school kids will.

Trapped could be described as Lord of the Flies-Nice. Another YA survival novel that did not live up to my expectations or the reviews it has been getting. Although there is lots of foreshadowing that sinister events are coming, all seven of the teens, trapped in their high school for a week by the worst blizzard ever, are decent, kind to each other and very normal. Even the school weird kid and the school scary kid are very normal. I am thrilled that Michael Northrop did not write the cliche "Breakfast Club" type story about misfits discovering they are not so different. More action and suspense would have made this book more appealing to young teens. Older teens will be able to appreciate the coming-of-age through disaster theme of Trapped.

When I ordered this book I thought it sounded like a great idea. In reading it though I had trouble getting past the teenage voice. Yep, this is YOUNG ADULT reading, and if you are a 15 year old boy you'd probably really enjoy it as there is a lot of hormones, zits, and cellphone use. I was wondering if the group of teenagers trapped in their school in a horrible snow storm might resort to some version of "LORD OF THE FLIES" but instead they felt guilty about breaking into the cafeteria to get peanut butter and bread. I did finish the book and although I would not recommend it to any of my friends I think it would be a great read for a teenage boy who might be a reluctant reader.Much like the breakfast club, the group of teenagers left to fend for themselves in their high school are all types. Pretty realistic but I would have liked it to have been a little more gritty.

I liked it. Brought back a lot of old memories of my younger days in high school. If you like stories about blizzards, this is a good one.

Well written, atmospheric, and fast paced. I greatly enjoyed it. The ending is abrupt but effective; you can easily deduce what happens from there. Also, anyone who has lived in the the Hartford area will enjoy a clever allusion to a well known news/weather personality. Highly recommended.

I would recommend this book for kids all around the world to read all the time if they were able to read all the time.I loved it.I have read a million books and by far my number 2favorite book.my mom would recommend this book for grown-ups and people around the world to read all the time.

the only reason i finished this book is because the storyline was good. the book itself was pretty poorly written. bad ending, too.

The Gift that Heals: Stories of hope, renewal and transformation through organ and tissue donation, by Reg Green

About the Author

?Reg Green has a powerful story of his own concerning the agony and the ecstasy that is the world of organ transplantation. But the strength of "The Gift That Heals: Stories of Hope, Renewal and Transformation Through Organ and Tissue Donation," is that Green has presented us with a multitude of portraits -- reminding readers that the need is great, the choices painstaking, the rewards priceless. It is about everyday people and their confrontations at the confluence of life and death -- a most remarkable achievement.? -- James Hill, managing editor, The Washington Post Writers Group... ?When Reg Green?s son was murdered he might have been expected to retreat into grief; a bitter, diminished man condemned to a life haunted by the boy who was not there. Instead, he has worked tirelessly to promote organ donation. "This is a book about those who have received and given the gift of life and there is a golden light in it. Green has a skill with words and the journalist?s knack for making a story compelling. The book is a celebration of life; of decency; of hope; of a little boy, and his father?s commitment.? -- Llewellyn King, syndicated columnist and PBS talk show host. "Here are the faces behind organ donation: devastated families who, instead of turning inward in bitterness and despair, find the compassion to help others in desperate need, and organ recipients, who once at death?s door, now run marathons, start families and resume their careers. Their stories are riveting." -- Robert Kiener, Reader's Digest. "Reg Green probably knows as much as anybody on the planet about the rich, heartbreaking and transcendent realm of organ donation. He is also a fine, careful journalist and this combination makes this a most compelling and inspirational collection." -- Stephanie Salter, syndicated columnist.

I ordered this book after deciding to donate my father's organs. He and my mother were hit by a drunk driver - mom died instantly so we couldn't donate hers, but dad lingered in a coma for 10 days before having a massive stroke, and was declared brain dead. This book includes short stories about organ donation from all sides. Some are the donor families, some are the recipients, some even from transplant coordinators, physicians, and pilots (who move the organs). All together, you can piece together the miracle whirlwind of donation from start to finish. It's an amazing accomplishment to pull-off in less than 24 hours in most cases!I am closing in on a year since donating from my father, and preparing to meet one of the recipients. I can't wait to hear about the excitment her family had that day - "come to the hospital, we have a liver for you!!!" - as we were signing the donation papers. This book has given me an idea of what THEY went through.I hungrily wait for a volume 2 of this book!!!

This is an interesting, informative, and comprehensive book, presenting the Transplant Process from multiple viewpoints, to create an unified picture of that complex world. I have commented on Ann Harris' review, which the reader may want to look at. Another reviewer finished this book in an hour. I would suggest reading this work only 2-3 stories at a time. I am not an emotional person, but I found it to be overwhelming to read more than that much in one sitting. My wife had a liver transplant eleven years ago, and my experience with transplant is as a family member. I am a physician, and I found it illuminating to read the experiences of nurses, doctors, coordinators, pilots, and others. The book obviously has the mission to encourage organ donation, and it is not a literary work. There is nothing wrong with that. The book reads like a collection of short stories, which it, indeed, is. Mr. Green leaves it up to the reader to synthesize the whole for one's own self. Despite his son's death, the author writes like a detached journalist, and a writer. My compliments to him. This is an excellent work, providing a new perspective on the strange world of the Organ Transplant.

Good

Amazing book!

I loved this book. There were lots of interesting stories about transplant. It made me appreciate transplant even more.

I have not communicated with either of the families who saved my life through the gift of organ donation. I spend a fair amount of time interacting with organ and tissue recipients but very little with donor families. I read Reg Green's famous book "The Nicholas Effect" and was profoundly impacted by his story telling. To see life from the other side of the surgical waiting room--well, I only gained more respect for the people who say "yes" during their time of loss.I find books on the donor family perspective to be both comforting and painful to read. Reading these books makes me feel connected to my unknown donor family and increases my awareness of all it took to let me live another day. I like that. When I heard about "The Gift that Heals" I was excited to read Reg Green's latest look into the lives connected to the world of donation. I read the book in about an hour--and I was taking my time! It's a very easy, quick read with many short stories about a large cross section of people. Some are donor families, some are tissue recipients and some have been saved by organ donation. Often, Green lets the stories of donor families and recipients weave together.Reg Green is one of those writers who does not draw attention to his style but tells a story so cleanly you hardly know you are reading. After my first pass at "The Gift that Heals" I was left wanting more. The stories seemed so simple, I wished for a more in-depth exploration of the donation experience. Later on in the day, and continuing on into the week, Reg Green's stories began to flash in my mind like a movie you can't get out of your head. When I revisited "The Gift that Heals" I was struck by how comprehensive the stories really were, complicated by life's circumstances but easy to follow because of Green's skill. The stories continue to dance in my mind, weeks after I have read the final page. There are many wonderful things about this book. Besides its comprehensive and clear writing, it touches on the rarely discussed subject of tissue donation. This is something few people understand and all of us should know. The stories are told in a way that allows the reader to feel "safe" in a difficult realm of human experience but somehow manages to not sugar coat the reality. Quite a masterful balance! Overall, this book is an ideal introduction to those unfamiliar with the value of organ/tissue donation and an powerful study for those who have lived it.Reg Green's son, Nicholas, taught an entire nation about the importance of "The Gift that Heals." Through his superb writing and thorough storytelling, Green has once again used his talent and family experience to educate everyone on this topic so close to my heart...or should I say lungs? Thank you, Reg Green. I highly recommend this book.Tiffany Christensentwo-time double lung transplant recipient and author "Sick Girl Speaks!"

This review is biased, because I'm in this book -- I'm part of chapter 19, "Lung recipient runs up skyscraper"... I'm the one running up the skyscraper. But, I share this chapter with my donor's precious family, and the beautiful lady who has her heart.I made the leap of faith that my story was going to be the most wonderful one there -- then I sat in our local coffee shop with the staff and patrons wondering about my sanity as I switched back and forth between an ear-to-ear grin and tears streaming over my cheeks... There are so many wonderful stories in this book -- perhaps more wonderfuller than mine -- about donors and donor families, living donors, recipients of all organs and tissues, and the medical people who save our lives and help donor families with their choices.Reg Green did an incredible job helping people tell their stories, just as he did a beautiful job telling the world about his precious son, Nicholas Green, in "The Nicholas Effect". There are over 40 little vignettes -- amazing stories of strength and courage and fear and love. Mostly love. This book shows how organ donors, living or deceased, and donor families are heroes to the people they save, and to their families and loved ones. It shows why the choice to be an organ donor is so very special and meaningful.Steve FerkauChicago, IL

Love how the images show up on my Kindle Fire HD. Unfortunately the only entry in the TOC is "Cover". At least the Search function works.

good intro to the artists work

Obviously the art was beautiful. The scans are clear so it's a great art reference book. I'd highly recommend this to anyone interested in Japanese art and culture.

Everything about this book is worth every penny. I have the hard cover and love this digital reference for on the go drawing. Buy it!!!

Inconsistent quality of the scans of photos makes me wonder as to the provenance of the images. No introduction, and no sourcing also were puzzling. As a fan of Kuniyoshi, nevertheless I enjoyed flipping through the, mostly, prints. Lots of typos, misspellings, and cryptic captions added almost nothing to this "book." Portrait after portrait was labeled simply "Actor."I would not buy another book by this author. However, $2.99 is such an insignificant amount that I don't feel that bad about the purchase.

Excellent - if you are a fan or collector of Kuniyoshi.

Very few of these works are paintings. They mostly prints, which for me makes them splendid. But many many English words misspelled. Makes me doubt the Japanese.

Nice work of traditional paintings or prints worth the 2.99 for kindle edition, good reference material for inspiration. Well worth it

The Myth of the Strong Leader: Political Leadership in the Modern Age, by Archie Brown

From Booklist

Oxford politics scholar Brown (The Rise and Fall of Communism, 2009) examines the nature of political leadership and challenges the notion that so-called strong leaders are the most effective. Even in a democracy, he suggests, we the people often prefer to hand executive power to charismatic, opinionated, sometimes even aggressive individuals, who dominate other policy-makers to achieve their agendas. But setting leaders above and apart from the ruling group as a whole makes leaders prone to vanity and self-deception and, in antagonizing other policy-makers, sets daunting obstacles in even the most driven leader’s path. Such has been the case for many U.S. presidents whose ambitious agendas were ultimately thwarted by Congress or the Supreme Court. Those political leaders who are best able to effect dramatic change may be those who, like Mikhail Gorbachev and Deng Xiaoping, understood the importance of collegiality and collaboration even as they transformed the systems that brought them to power. Reviewing and categorizing dozens of heads of state past and present, Brown raises important questions about the nature of leadership and the expectations we have for our leaders. --Brendan Driscoll

Review

"...an important and unusual read ... Brown does a wonderful job of showing how the same qualities that can seem so appealing in strong leaders can lead, in the mildest cases, to bad decision-- and, in the most extreme cases, to death and suffering on a massive scale ... Though The Myth of the Strong Leader is about political leadership, you come away from Brown's book with a deeper understanding of leadership in general."―Bill Gates' Favorite Books of 2016"Counter-intuitive but splendidly argued ... This is an ambitious work made more compelling by its breadth."―Washington Post"Rich and multidimensional."―Foreign Affairs"It is a pleasure to find a book on political leadership that imposes no theories or models but studies actual political leaders, dozens of them from many countries, in a historical survey from the beginning of the 20th century."―Wall Street Journal"A rich description of different varieties of political leadership in diverse cultures. It is hard to imagine a better guide than Brown, who has lived and worked in the UK, US and Russia, and is both an outstanding political scholar and an elegant, witty writer."―Guardian (UK)"Persuasive analysis of politically leadership."―Independent (UK)"Impressive in scope and sophistication, Brown offers a model of leadership that is both strong and purpose driven."―Choice"A sure-handed historical review with an engaging viewpoint."―Kirkus"Rich in historical detail and insight."―Publishers Weekly"Brown raises important questions about the nature of leadership and the expectations we have for our leaders."―Booklist

The idea that the more power one individual leader wields, the more we should be impressed by that leader is an illusion. Where corners are cut because one leader is sure he knows best, problems follow, and they can be on a disastrous scale, according to Archie Brown in this book. The book examines the leadership styles of a large range of political leaders including dictators and democratic leaders. The author’s essential thesis is that it is unhelpful to rate political leaders on a single strong-weak scale given that there are so many different dimensions to effective leadership, and indeed leaders who are unconstrained by others in making their decisions tend to make significantly poorer decisions. Mao Zedong was a better leader in the early days of the Chinese Communist Party than when he acquired a position of absolute power. Tony Blair made his poorest decisions when he made them without adequate discussion with others. The book tells interesting stories about a very large number of political leaders from the past century. The author has a great deal of personal knowledge of many of those leaders, and the book is an excellent history book. However, it is hard to read the book without observing that the best leaders are rarely the ones who float to the top of the political process, whether in democracies or in dictatorships. The author has provided extensive material to demonstrate the dangers of the “strong” political leader, but the stories do not coalesce into a neat description of the characteristics of a “good” political leader.

The book starts with a simple statement which to me was only obvious after I had read it: concentrating power in a “strong leader” means allocating it arbitrarily to the leader’s personal assistants.Because no single human can cope with the increased volume of information and decisions - despite the myths these “strong leaders” like to perpetuate about themselves - the decisions get made by the close staff of these leaders. This leaves out the other people who should have led on these decisions, eg cabinet members who are of higher calibre and expertise and experience than the advisers.Furthermore, more discussion with more people gets better decisions. This is obvious with the likes of Hitler, Mussolini, Mao and Stalin as leaders who accumulated power. But the book is full of examples of other leaders to make the case.I wish history at schools was taught about these leaders and events, the 20th century is about more than Hitler but sadly that’s too often all children are taught about.I don’t know that the author’s case is conclusively proven - it’s hard to make this into a scientific argument. But it’s fascinating to read and - especially as the author dislikes Tony Blair greatly - to read it in light of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership style. A really enjoyable and thoughtful book.

Finally an analysis of what really works in leadership! A strong leader is fine if they have the bandwidth and perfect intelligence to make the correct decision every time. This is folly. The better way is to get all the intelligent, diverse input then lead to a decision. Fascinating!

Autocratic leaders almost always fail at some point with disastrous consequences for themselves as well as the people they lead. Consensus builders achieve lasting results. The book is a history lesson on how leaders of 20th and 21st century shaped the world that we live in today.

Its a good book for understanding the type of political leadership that can be found in history and what are actions were the ones that made presidents o prime ministers successful. I wish it addressed a bit more on the personalities of the leaders describe more how they were and how they handled they’re position in government.

I like this book because I'm such a fan of collaborative leadership. This book shows why authoritarian leadership is not helpful and not even strong.

Required reading to understand the use of history.

Good book. Leadership at its core.

Hellboy: The Complete Short Stories Volume 1, by Mike Mignola

About the Author

Mike Mignola's fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age; reading Dracula at age twelve introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore, from which he has never recovered. Starting in 1982 as a bad inker for Marvel Comics, he swiftly evolved into a not-so-bad artist. By the late 1980s, he had begun to develop his own unique graphic style, with mainstream projects like Cosmic Odyssey and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. In 1994, he published the first Hellboy series through Dark Horse, and several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien, and Sir Edward Grey: Witchfinder), prose books, animated films, and two live-action films starring Ron Perlman. Along the way he worked on Francis Ford Coppola's film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer for Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001), and was the visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), and the upcoming Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen . Mike's books have earned numerous awards and are published in a great many countries. Mike lives in Southern California with his wife, daughter, and cat.

Hellboy is a character with an insanely rich mythos and Mignola and other creators have plumbed those depths numerous times with fascinating tales of his life before the main "story" arcs of Seeds of Destruction, Wild Hunt, and Hellboy in Hell. Collected in two large collections are many of Hellboy's one shots and short stories. This first volume is probably the weaker of the two in my opinion but that isn't by much. The collections are fantastic reads for anyone who enjoys the characters and the world Mignola put together; the main "story" also frequently references these short stories. The main star of this collection is the Hellboy in Mexico stories that tell of a time when the character traveled across America's southern border and spent time with a group of luchadores and interacted with creatures of Mexican folklore. He even managed to wind up married to an evil spirit (an amusing story that was directly referenced in the Hellboy in Hell omnibus).

Amazing!! Before this I'd only seen the movies and bits of the stories. Worth every penny, and I'm so very glad I got it. Looking forward to reading more.....

A good collection of Hellboy short stories. Some I already seen in previous Hellboy graphic collections, but still a good read, especially when you can get it on a sale.

Love that they're finally compiling the short stories, too. Before it was difficult to obtain all of them, much less read them in chronological order. A must have for collectors and those new to the series.

nice work.

Great read, definite recommend if you're looking to get into the series. Paperback is in good quality too.

Fantastic read & artwork
