This is a readable, clear, contextual look at Michelangelo’s life and work. If you want to learn a lot about the guy quickly, this is your best bet.

This books is sooo beautiful. I mean really. It's amazing. It was supposed to be a text book for my class but I love it and now it is going to be a coffee table piece to share with everyone.

This book was suggested for a course I am taking on Michelangelo. It is excellent in the format as to what the lecture series encompasses. I am pleased that I bought the book because it is an excellent reference in the event that I travel again to Italy and visit the museums and churches that have Michelangelo's works.

Fine

More great information on Michelangelo's life and talents.

If you were to read only one text dealing with the great Michelangelo and his art, this would be the book. It is a succinct biography in which one also finds clear and well chosen discussions of the artistic works of the great Florentine. It would be fair to say that Professor Hibbard is a graceful guide to these works--he shows us the key elements of the sculpture, painting and architecture that made Michelangelo the preeminent figure of the Renaissance. And he presents them to us as the artist's life unfolds, so that we can understand the challenges met and problems solved at various stages in Michelangelo's development. The book is filled with a large number of black and white photographs as well as plans and drawings which, together, help the reader understand each of the works being discussed. Indeed, the reader would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of opposing pages that do not have one or more illustrations. For those who are so inclined and long to see more of each work, they are titled so clearly that a quick search on line can bring plenty more to look at. But the illustrations provided in the book are more than sufficient for the reader's understanding. If you are looking for a shocking expose of Michelangelo the man, with all of his secrets revealed (warts and all!), then you do not want to read this book. Professor Hibbard discusses Michelangelo's personality and personal life in detail, but always in the context of his creations. He writes with a deft and gentlemanly reserve that allows the reader to accept the facts without drawing unreasonable conclusions. The conversations about the well-known works - the Pieta, the David, the Sistine Chapel ceiling and Last Judgment - are all clear and helpful. The on and off again relationships with various Medici and Popes provides a helpful understanding of how and why some of the artist's projects were unfinished, or completed in terms altogether different from their conception. The discussions of the architectural contributions of Michelangelo are very good, and provide the reader with an appreciation of the sculptural qualities of these larger than life sculptures. Indeed, Hibbard's discussion of the Bibliotheca Laurenziana stairway and St Peter's are the best sort of architectural criticism to be found anywhere. At the end of the book, but separate from the extensive bibliography, is a section called "Notes for Further Reading", which, if followed, could benefit the reader who wants to know more.If you find this review hepful, why not read some of my other reviews! Happy reading!

There is probably no greater art historian in the second half of the 20th century than Howard Hibbard and this book is one of his best. Professor Hibbard, who has also written books on Caravaggio and a study of Poussin turns his attention to Michelanglo. This is not a rehash of The Agony and Ecstasy, Professor Hibbard's interest is in the work and the artist and not a study of the outward events of this great artist's life. I found Professor Hibbord's criticism insightful and interesting. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the renaissance.

In _Michelangelo_, Hibbard presents a unbiased account of Michelangelo's life in an enjoyable mix of historical narravitve and critical and contextual analysis. The writing is approachable with a minimum of high-brow art jargon. Hibbard also refrains from diving too deep into speculation about fine points such as sexuality and politics. This book is suited for those desiring an end-to-end introduction to the man and his art, or for those who have forgotten 90% of art survey 101, like me.

Normally I really enjoy reading the In Death series. Concealed is a very disappointing and boring read. In my opinion. It wasn't the "I can't put this book down" I have experienced in the past. It has one slightly redeeming quality and that is learning more about a supporting character. While a lot of characters are missing. A new character I hope isn't added in all the time now. That said it felt more like a faux J.D. Robb book, then the real thing. It is the first book in the series I won't read again.

I’m an “In Death” junkie (print and audio) and this novel definitely left me feeling unfulfilled. The characters didn’t ring true at all. On page 130 Roarke questions how Mavis acquired the “grey” coat that Eve borrowed. Mavis didn’t loan Eve a grey coat… it was black. For years Roarke has carried around the grey button from the grey suit that Eve wore… that she owned. Now all of a sudden he forgets where it came from??? Really disappointing! It’s all the detail from one novel to the next that makes this series so wonderful – this book reads as if someone who doesn’t even know the characters or the stories wrote it. Where was J. D. Robb in the writing or the editing???

I see that more than one reviewer is convinced that J. D. Robb (AKA Nora Roberts) did not write this book. I disagree."Concealed in Death" is a departure from many of the books that preceded it in the "In Death" series. It doesn't dwell as much on the future, its technology, fashions and culture, and it doesn't have the biting edge that characterized everything about Eve Dallas since she first appeared on the scene, so many years ago. But, as far as I can see, that's not about a different writer, it's a brilliant and subtle nod to the growth in the estimable Lieutenant. This story is not about her abhorrent childhood, and all the adults (including Homeland Security) who enabled her horrible abuse, or covered it up, allowing it to continue (shades of the Catholic Church). But her childhood informs everything she does, just not so obviously. When twelve bodies of young (12-14 years of age) street girls are discovered behind a fake wall in what used to be a sanctuary for homeless kids, she dives right in, bringing her own experiences to bear, understanding these kids (and the survivors) in ways that no other policeman or policewoman could. It helps her build a scenario in her head, a story so dreadful that it's almost too much to bear.Instead of her nightmares being flashbacks to her childhood, they are now dreams of the victims talking to each other and to her, bringing insight and understanding rather than terror.Eve is growing into her own skin. Still prickly, she has softened around the edges, finally moved by the beauty of what she sees around her, and the spectacular life she is only now beginning to understand and cherish. And Ms. Roberts has outdone herself. She is, of course, a brilliant writer, and this new direction for Eve Dallas allows her the freedom to weave exquisite emotion into events and words that once might have been exciting, but not moving like they are in "Concealed In Death". She moved me to tears more than once. Her incredible respect, no love, for Mavis and Leonardo and Mira and Dennis fills her heart, and the reader's. One of the best lines about love I've ever read was in this book:"Those eyes, those wild blue eyes met hers. He didn't have to say a thing to say everything"Dallas has gotten beyond her surprising discovery that she was worthy of love, and that love is a wonderful thing. She has learned to accept it, and revel in it. The byplay between her and her husband, Roark is peppered with "he understands" and "he gets me", the acknowledgement of two souls deeply entangled, all flaws exposed, all things open and vulnerable and the sheer luck (or fate) that has put her with someone whom she knows loves her, without having to hear the words. Just think of it, she even likes Christmas now. This is where Eve Dallas needed to grow to. And, though the cases and the culprits may be a little less vicious (and less cartoonish), her relationships with others, including her victims, are deeper, more knowing, and more compassionate. It's a wonderful thing to see. Ms. Robb has done well.I commend her, just as I recommend this book without reservation.

This was another one of her best and is definitely one of my more favorite books within the last 10 books or so of the series!!I've seen some reviews mention ghost writer possibilities with in this series and must say there were definitely one or two books where I also experienced the same oddities others mentioned (Eve's beloved character feeling and/or doing things ompletely off - definitely off putting for a die hard fan, grammatical and spelling errors throughout book (little annoying), and biggest call out for me was I could easily put the book down and not have the desire to pick it back up again... almost difficult to read.) I mention this having had no idea what a ghost writer was at the time I read these particular books. I just learned days ago about ghost writers by reading future book a few previous and one future In Death reviews...haha!I've intentionally expanded on all of the above just so I could say now, with complete confidence, that this was without a doubt NOT one written by a ghost writer. I could not put this was down, but if I absolutely had to I made time to come back to it ASAP, as per usual.I'm sure at this point anytime reading this review likely wants to know which of the books I perceived to be written by a ghost writer ;-) I do know the one right before Concealed was one and the other I'd have to go look at my online library for the name, but it's was within the 7 book a prior to that. I'll try to come back and edit my review with direct names if I can later :-) However, regardless of their lack of the better author, I personally would still read them. I don't like having questions or confusion in series reading because of skipping and books. Finally, J.D. Robb (by Nora Roberts) is my favorite author, with the In Death novels being and I hope this review was helpful and my reviewers are pleased with the expanded details. My hope is you still read them all, but just find yourself not so disappointed in the two books that are likely not written by Nora herself. I also hope this removed any doubt about the quality of future books in the series. Keep reading knowing that those that lye ahead are as fantastic as the others written by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts.)Happy reading!

Pros: I really liked this book and author's intention and energy. She does offer some good exercise examples and encourages moms-to-be to basically get up and get their butt and their bump moving - anything helps! It was a nice motivator for me to start thinking in this direction and hopefully, be active once I feel better after the first trimester is over. Aside from the numerous typos, it was a fast read. I finished it in 3 days and marked pages that are essential to reference with a sticky page marker.Cons: 1. It was alarming to me that the author kept recommending low fat options, dairy in particular. Being on a low fat diet is never good, but it is especially not recommended in pregnancy (and especially, if you have fertility issues). Consuming high (good) fat diet (such as avocados, full fat farm dairy (eggs, grass fed butter, milk, yogurt), nuts, etc.) is super important for fetal development (and for being fertile). There is research out there on this topic and low fat dairy in particular is linked to infertility. Not to mention the obvious facts about the processing of the food to make it "low fat". Low fat food is over-processed food with a bunch of additives to compensate for the full flavor (usually more carbs and sugar). Bottom line: it is so unhealthy for you and for baby. I am shocked to see this advise in this type of a book.2. It was really hard to read often times becuase of SO MANY typos and bad grammar! It was so annoying! Every page had at least 1-2 typos/mistakes, which, in my opinion, compromised the validity of the information and author's credibility. It was a turn off for me. The other thing I would like to warn readers about , especially if you have sensitivity to scents or nausea - is that this book's pages smell really strong. It smells like newspaper and the quality of the paper is like a newspaper. I had to hold the book far away from my face or even vent the pages before I could read.3. In addition, everything in this book is black and white, even recipe pictures (which do not look appetizing in black and white). There are 6 color pictures of some foods at the end of the book, but that's it. One other thing: the author repeats the same information quite a bit, which to me seems like an unnecessary filler.

Too complicated. I gave to Goodwill.

Great bookI recommend this .
