I brought the 7th because I'm cheap and I didn't what to dish out an extra $100 bucks for the 8th edition. My professor said we'd be perfectly fine with this edition. (and from what I've heard, there isn't much difference b/w them.)Now the book itself is well written. The author writes in simple informative sentences that do a decent job of engaging you as a reader. At the end of each chapter, you are presented with "terms to understand", a "summary" and some problems. (Note: the publishers were actually nice enough you give you the answers to both odd AND even problems). There are also helpful side notes that point out important information or extra detail about a topic on the page.There are a FEW problems with this book that do set it back to only 4 stars. First of all, and most importantly, is the color palette. The majority of the book is printed using only black, grey, and blue. That includes all the diagrams, pictures, and whatnot. This isn't too much of an issue because most of the diagrams and graphs are simple enough too understand without the need of color. It just makes the book a little more dull in my opinion. On a side note, chapter 17 does include a 12 page insert that shows some cool, glossy and COLORFUL images.My only other problem with this book is the paper quality. It feels slightly better than regular notebook paper. If you like to highlight as you read, I advise you to be careful. Don't press to hard or use very dark colors.Overall, this textbook should make your life a lot easier if you put the time and effort into it.
Quantitative Analysis is probably most Biochemistry students' worst nightmare, but it was the most rigorously scientific class of any of those required for the major. If you can't handle "Quant", you aren't a scientist. You may be able to weigh a sample. You may be able to pipette a few microliters here and there. You may be able to write up a report on the results of your experiments. But without an understanding of the principles in this book, you do not have any idea what the actual quality of your conclusions is, and any true professional who reads your report will note the lack of quantitative and statistical support for your conclusions and therefore disregard them.Study hard, and understand this book. I spent hours per day for an entire semester absorbing this book (or rather, the text book, with this book assisting me), which one of the best text books I've encountered (though there are a few typos/mistakes in some of the exercises).
This book is really great to have in addition to the textbook. Even though the questions are not listed in the book along with the problems, it shows you how to work through each problem. If you find yourself in situations like mine where your professor has different ways of calculating the scenarios seen in this book, then it would be best to study those. The solutions manual will aid in helping you check your answer. Good luck for those purchasing this product! :)
College text books, you know, "don't get me started". My son's professor required this "earlier" edition and in so doing saved us a boat load of money and provided our son with the information he needed. I'm sure there are one or two sentences that could be upgraded, but we're fine with 99.9879% in a book he may never need to return to.
This book is great. But I'll never need its contents in modern times. But in the End Times, this will be my bible, along with Organic Chemistry.
The book goes into detail about things, but I feel that there could be more that the author could have expanded on. They give you an equation and will give you an example, but will explain it in a confusing way. It rarely explains any alternative ways to solve the the problem presented even if the way presented in the book is a lot more confusing. This book is definitely not a book you would want to get if you want to teach yourself chemical analysis.
