This book sounds good on paper. A fun, heist-oriented plot; interesting subject matter with the writer angle, great potential for that perfect blend of suspense, mystery and intrigue, and a popular proven author. Unfortunately, it delivers on virtually none of its potential. Before I point out a laundry list of irritations, I will just say a really good way to describe my reading experience with this novel is to point out two things I did while reading it.1. I had to double-check several times to make sure it wasn't an abridged version.2. I also, seriously, double-checked to make sure it was a John Grisham novel.Ok, the laundry list:1. This book was begging for a subplot about the circumstances around grandma's death. Characters were introduced and the set-up was there.... and then, just nothing.2. Our protagonist was milk-toast. You neither hate nor like her much.3. There was seriously NO intrigue, no twist, no turns, no suspense, no mystery... just boring and obvious.4. No cleverness factor. You can't write a heist novel and have no clever heist things happening. The one or two attempts were pretty weak and again - obvious.5. Did I miss something? The way the story played up the question of whether or not the Cable's were married made you think it would eventually be relevant to the plot. It wasn't. Very odd.6. The dangerous aspect of one of the thief's was weird. Early on you think he will factor into the plot on the suspense side of things. He ends up being one more character who kind of disappears from the book, for most of it.7. I thought it was kind of strange we never had any interaction with the sister.8. Terrible, terrible ending. It fit the rest of the book though. Anti-climactic and boring.9. The guy running on the beach? Character sort-of introduced, and then.... nothing.This book was so short. Makes me think the intention was originally for a longer book and to cover more ground but for some reason it got slashed down to a "short" story. That would help explain the oddness of things, people, etc., that were briefly introduced and then never mentioned again. would have needed to be twice as long to cover the ground it teased it would. If you're going to write a short heist story, it's got to be tight, clever and interesting. This book was the opposite.

I set my alarm several hours early so I could read this before work, and I don't regret the time. For me, Grisham's last few offerings have been hit and miss, with many of them having disappointing resolutions. While Camino Island does wrap up rather quickly, it did not feel rushed or unfinished.The characters really drive the novel, and I found them very engaging. Mercer, Bruce, Noelle, and the supporting cast are all interesting and fun, and carried the novel even more than the plot, which was solid but could have used a little more development in a few spots. I was originally expecting a few more "thriller" elements, but I'm actually glad that Grisham did not include chases or high suspense, because I think they would have weakened the story in the end. The book is consistent in plot and tone, and I read it straight through with no desire to take a break.On the whole, this is a solid and enjoyable read, and definitely one of Grisham's best efforts in recent years.

Normally enjoy Grisham's work but this was a big disappointment. The plot was incredibly silly. When I reached the end, all I could think was - is this really all there is to this? Young promising writer gets enticed into a high level sting to find stolen original Fitzgerald manuscripts. Elaine - the recruiter and the recruitment were completely unbelievable. So the FBI and this high powered investigation firm are watching every aspect of Bruce's life including shipments in and out of his shop and they don't think to look at the shipments out of his wife's shop which is connected by a basement door to Bruce's shop? Sheesh, somebody's face must be red. None of the characters were believable. Silly plot, stilted characters...my advice is to skip this round of Grisham. It is a waste of time.PS - And what the heck was the whole Denny side story about? He sold the manuscripts and then what - he was going to steal them back? Who knows and, more importantly, who cares?

Paper thin characters and a flat plot make this a disappointing novel. It's so bad that I'm kicking myself for wasting money on it. I was sucked in by promising first chapters, which detailed the heist of rare manuscripts from Princeton University's library. But the fun stopped just pages later as the thieves made mistakes not foreshadowed by their meticulous preparation for the heist. The clever, resourceful high tech bad guys suddenly became petty thugs.An unhappy writer/adjunct professor was recruited to help get the manuscripts back. Sounds good, but she could not possibly be more dull. She whines her way through a flat plot, collecting intel on a bookstore owner suspected to having stolen the manuscripts.Even as I'm writing this, I'm thinking, this could have been good!It isn't. It feels like a half-hearted effort to meet a deadline. There is no suspense. There are no plot twists. There is very little resolution. It is impossible to care about any of the characters. Even the setting is off. The story is set in a fictional island near Jacksonville, yet it does not have any of the charm of that area. It reads more like a mash-up of Miami and Cape Cod.Even with its odd beachy juxtaposition of a seaside Ritz Carlton and nearby nesting turtles, it is not worth adding to any list of beach reads.

This is a history of how the US Army created and ran its Death Row. The military had had stockades before 1955, and it certainly had sentenced and executed members of the U.S. military, but this was the first move to centralize military prisons at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and to create a single facility for housing condemned prisoners and maintaining a gallows. It's a racial history, for while eight white and nine black prisoners dwelt there, only black prisoners, eight of them, would be executed, the last in 1961 -- the last time (to date) the military has carried out a death sentence.The book centers on the last prisoner, John Bennett. His crime was not murder, but the rape of a civilian girl in occupied Austria. The casual nature of his court-martial and the long, drawn-out nature of his time awaiting the hangman, is fully described. We learn much about Army justice in those years, and about life for African-Americans in a segregated and discrimination-ridden military. We learn much of the day-to-day routine on Ft. Leavenworth's death row, the lives of its inmates and staff, and the peculiar career of the Army hangman. We see how the appeals, pardons and executions proceed over those years, and it doesn't reflect well on Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy, who had to review the sentences and sign off, one way or another. It's worth bearing in mind, since the Uniform Code of Military Justice still carries capital crimes and a death row still exists at Ft. Leavenworth, albeit in a newer prison there. It's a grim but important story, and the author seems to have done good research in military archives in Washington and Kansas, and in two presidential libraries. Highly recommend for students of military law and racial injustice.

The US military justice system is often addressed dismissively (consider the old saw "military justice is to justice as military music is to music"). This is an unfair characterization of a system that is, in my opinion, not only equal to the civilian criminal justice system, but possibly superior to it.The events in this book generally spans the post Korean War through the early 1960s. The early years include some events driven by the immediate post-WWII occupation of Germany, the resulting presence of US occupation forces during the early reconstruction efforts. Truman's 1948 Executive Order ordering desegregation of the armed forces not withstanding (which is underappreciated for its influence on other equal opportunity efforts) the effects of this were evolutionary, not revolutionary.Richard Serrano provides a focused look at special cases in the 1950s military prisoner population at Leavenworth, the last remaining prisoners on death row there. Overall, his approach is fact and evidence based.This book is at its best when addressing the ground level events (both at Leavenworth and in the places where the events that led these men there took place). He journals a time when PTSD was not fully defined or understood, but which was clearly part of the fabric of WWII and Korean War veterans who fill its pages. I was surprised by the often kind behavior of guards towards their condemned charges.Serrano's view of the effectiveness of the military justice system is dimmer than mine, but I don't fault him for that. I expect that favorable treatment aligned with race was as prevalent in the non-military justice system at the time, and this was reflection of the overall times.In general, he depicts military matters with decent accuracy. There is some nuance missing, as in his description of a soldier who was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Anybody who has served during specified periods since 1950 qualified for one the moment they entered service...so it's not exactly a resume builder.This is a minor nitpick about a book that provides a good examination of an important matter for anybody inside or outside of the military and which remains sadly relevant today.

Summoned at Midnight -- an exceedingly apt title for an agonizing and difficult book to read, and even more agonizing and difficult for Richard A. Serrano to write. The reader can only guess at the courage and perseverance Serrano summoned to locate and interview the persons whose personal memories and eyewitness accounts tell the stories of black and white soldiers condemned to death row at the Fort Leavenworth Disciplinary Barracks. In the long, painful history of black-white relations, Serrano is to be commended for bringing a bit of truth to the light of day.

In this book Robert Klitgaard recounts his experiences as a foreign aid expert in the African country of Equatorial Guinea. His life there during the 1980s illustrate the difficulties of providing help to African countries which are ruled by tribal or clan cliques... the probllems of economic development in the third world were magnified in the small country of Equatorial Guinea, which had sunk into corruption and economic stagnation since the departure of the Spanish.The author's writing style makes this a really easy read while at the same time being illustrative of the problems involved in Africa. Even if you aren't particularly interested in African history or economics it's still a fun book to read.

this book is as relevant and as timely today as in 1990 in laying out the harsh realities that international aid/assistance faces on a daily basis in many third world countries. in many of the world's developing countries, the plight of whose people attract so much sympathy, are ruled by elites who don't give a damn about most of their populations and are only interested in feeding their pockets. When I once highlighted how difficult cooperation with the Chinese could be as they come and take the resources , I was told simply that's ok because its the will of the Africans. unfortunately its not , its the will of the deal wheeling elite. If you have an interest in international development/aid , read this book. its not easy to aid! GRWAT BOOK should be basic reading for all those joining international organisations, NGOs, bilateral organisations,diplomats, etc

This book makes a great description of EqG, the politics, the distrust, the power of President Obiang. The reality described by the author is still valid today, almost 30 years later and an oil boom and bust in between.

I lived in Basile, EG for 2.5 years starting in 1982 isn't there some way we can support the School there? It seemed to be an example of something that works.

Really liked the book. A detailed report of a World Bank consultant working in Equatorial Guinea. Surprisingly, dictator Obiang is still in power!!

The book is boring and although it gives the perspective of the author and the difficulties of managing an economic development stabilization project, it does not happen like this so much anymore.

Equatorial Guinea is one of the worst governed nations in the world--although terms like "govern" don't really apply to this tiny, newly oil-rich enclave on the coast of west Africa. The head of state, Teodoro Obiang, seized power from his uncle, Francisco Macías, who became head of state when the colonial power, Spain, left in 1968. Macias was credibly accused of genocide, cannibalism and total insanity--he spoke to God regularly and acted based on those discussions. Obiang is preferable only in comparison.While Klitgaard's book is dated--he finished while the discover and exploitation of oil fields wasn't even being considered--it remains a valuable, entertaining and occasionally frustrating account of the collision of the first world with--well with whatever world if after the third.Klitgaard worked in the planning ministry of EQ for over two years, his salary paid by the World Bank, in order to help them get up to western standards in a few minimal (and ultimately completely inconsequential) areas. The institutions that took it upon themselves to intervene into the economic and social collapse there were the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the United Nations. In each case their efforts worsened the problems they had come to help solve.At the end of "Tropical Gangsters" Klitgaard wasn't optimistic about the future. Everything that has happened since then has shown his caution was well placed.
