I love this book. The stories are very charming and have an aspect of meaning not caught in English. I am a beginner German learner, and it's a little tough: takes 3 or 4 readings before I can read without looking at the English page, but worth the struggle. Original Grimm stories.
This has been a terrific tool, both in increasing my German vocabulary, as well as in improving my grammar. The fairy tales themselves are very well written German -- which, from my point of view, is what I want to be reading: I might as well develop good habits. And it's a great deal of fun, to boot. I've doubled or even tripled my reading speed, and I just notice that vocabulary comes to my mind much more easily than before. I strongly recommend it, for English speakers learning German, as a supplement to whatever German language course you might be using.
what I have read and translated is good
I would recommend this to anyone learning German. Be aware that the language is not colloquial German - it is fairy tale language, not common speech.
You likely know many of these stories, but from a German learning perspective, the language is easy to read and the dual translations are very helpful (if not always accurate though)
For German practice, this is great. The text is aligned for you to find the parallels easily. No pictures.
This book is the perfeect addition to any study regime as it shows side by side translations of the original Brothers Grimm's Fairtales. The translator made special effort to keep the english as much as a "transcription" as possible, sacrificing of course some flow, but the learning advantage this presents is immense.However, the cover is a LITTLE flimsy.
For a German Student, the parallel texts are great. Most of the time it is a literal translation minus the short rhymes but even some of those are too. Literal translation is a lot more helpful in learning German. I also liked to know what the original stories actually consisted of. German fairy tails are a lot more bleak than the American versions of them. All together awesome book.
