About the Author
Nick Pyenson is the curator of fossil marine mammals at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. His work has taken him to every continent, and his scientific discoveries frequently appear in the New York Times, the Washington Post, National Geographic, Los Angeles Times, The Economist, Popular Mechanics, USA Today, on NPR, NBC, CBC, and the BBC. Along with the highest research awards from the Smithsonian, he has also received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from the Obama White House. He lives with his family in Maryland.

This is a book that teaches the reader, with easily absorbed excerpts, of the amazing life of a very talented paleontologist. Follow along as he easily brings us into his detective work about this most incredible, and yes awesome, creatures that live on this Earth with us.
A fantastic book on many levels. If you have ever seen a whale in the wild, you know the fascination. This book explains these marvelous creatures - feeding, migrating, interacting with their kind, changing with our rapidly altering earth. It explains evolution. Most importantly, at least to me, the author explains the allure of science better than most of the books I’ve read- how a bit of data suddenly answers one question and suggests ten more. How working with friends expands our horizons. The role of serendipity in discovery. Enjoy!
I heard this gentleman interviewed on NPR's SciFri. After the interview, I immediately ordered his book. It is a fascinating exploration of the evolutionary history of whales as well and containing copious information about baleen whales. The book was quickly shipped and arrived in perfect condition. My only quibble with this book is the less than adequate illustrations and a lack of tables, etc to further explain the information. thank you.
Don't let my 4 star review keep you from grabbing this book. It's a great read, very informative... it just isn't among the BEST I've read.(For context, think of Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" or "Why Evolution Is True" by Jerry Coyne).In all honesty, if you're interested in whales or the evolutionary process at all, read this! I have a greater appreciation for whales in general, and the scientific method of determining evolutionary history in general.
Well written history of whale evolution, their present state and a look at their future by a true expert. The science is at a high level but anyone who was paying attention in high school biology should be fine. Think of it as a fun textbook on whales. Jim
A modern-day Origin of Species, Dr. Pyenson journeys though time to explore the past present and future of earth's most massive species. Using old-fashioned chisels and flensing knifes, radio trackers, 3D laser scans, and drones, Pyenson takes us on an epic adventure through the eyes of a paleobiologist. His prose is enjoyable and effortless to read in spite of complex technical terms and ideas. What a great book!
There is no better person to write about Donald Trump during his campaign and as President of the United State than someone who has had the pleasure (or displeasure) of working for him. And Omarosa is an example of someone among many who was in the fold but who got expelled from the fold for differing with Trump. Trump is, increasingly, left with Yes men and Yes women because to disagree with him or stifle his impulses gets you terminated. She has the additional insight of having been on The Apprentice when Trump was, according to her, at the peak of his mental capabilities. She has noticed a decline more than some by being with him over a very long time prior to, during and following his campaign for president and into his presidency. It's well written.
Enjoyed the book very much. Author has great depth of knowledge. Enjoyed learning more about these amazing creatures.Found parts where he goes out on whaling ships and participated in the rendering of fresh kills. Intellectually I understand but morally do we and does he still have to participate in this activity.
