Although I am not a Christian per se anymore, this is one of my favorite books of all time, though perhaps their might be some myths contained, also. Of course, the Bible with Deuterocanonical books would be the other Christian book on my all-time list.The Old Order Mennonites and Amish never hurt anyone, but weree hunted down and murdered by Roman Catholics and magisterial Protestants. The cover depicts one of the most beloved accounts in the Martyr's Mirror, where one of the Anabaptists Christians (can't remember his name offhand) is running away to elude capture by the authorities. One of his hunters falls into a lake and would have drowned, except that the Anabaptist man feels sadness for the drowning man and decides to save his life, no matter what happens. Of course, the Anabaptist is put to death for heresy despite saving the life of his would be captor. This is the sign of someone close to God - to be willing to show mercy even to enemies.As a 12ers Shia Muslim, I consider these martyrs to be true followers of Jesus Christ because they do one of the most difficult things anyone can do ... be a mercy even to enemies. I am reminded of stories of our Prophet and Imams, who visited enemies when they were ill, or took care of enemies and their families when they fell on hard times. One such story tells of our 4th Imams, who as a older man gave shelter and protected Ummayyad Dynasty rulers after their Caliphate was taken over by the Abbasid dynasty, and this despite the fact that many Ummayyads opposed his great grandfather, the Prophet, fought his grand father, the 4th and last Rightly Guided Caliph and 1st Imam, and witnessed his father the 3rd Imam and all his male family members except himself (who was 12 year old and very ill and forbidden to defend by his father) martyred and then marched off as prisoners by the army of the 2nd Ummayad Caliph. True, the 12ers Shia Muslims do fight defensive wars with limits while most Anabaptists were pacifists, but from the time of the 4th Imam until the time of the consultation of the 12th Imam, none of the Imams sought political power or even had armies, and all of the 12 Imams except the last Imam were murdered by the Ummayyad and Abbasid Dynastic empires because true religion tends to be at odds with Emperors and Dictators. It is still the case today as can be seen in Iraq, where Arab 12ers Shia Muslims and Kurdish Sunni and 12er Shia Muslims are being attacked and martyred by Al Qaeda and Isis, and in Afganistan and Pakistan by the Taliban. Just as there are many flavors of Christianity, there are many flavors of Muslims, and many of them seem to have forgotten that Islam as taught in the Quran is supposed to be a religion of peace, but I digress ...As a 12ers Shia Muslim, I would love to have Old Order Mennonite and Amish neighbors. I would have nothing to fear from them, and those that are not allowed to drive cars would always be welcome to get a ride to the doctor from us, or any other neighborly help we can give.
Own a copy and read it with attention. Anyone who considers themselef a follower of Christ, and does not own a copy of this book, I have doubts about your commitment. You are a 1/2 Christian = a lukewarm = not good.Take Joel Osteen, he would never mention this book as it would empty his church. This book will open your eyes to the false deception called Protestantism.
This book will definitely boost your faith. In particular, when I was reading letters that were written to the families from persons that were knowingly going to their death for their faith, it was both inspiring and heartbreaking.All of the previous reviews have covered just about everything.It is a big volume, and a Kindle edition would be wonderful! As I get older it seems to be easier to read on the computer than to hold the book. Also you can make the fonts much larger.

The Martyr's Mirror is a Seventeenth Century Anabaptist work, still actively read and used in Amish and Mennonite homes everywhere. Many of these stories will bring one to tears as they consider the suffering of those who gave their all for their faith.This edition contains many beautiful illustrations. I like how well bound it is, sturdy and attractive. Well worth the price for such a large volume.
Exceptional detail in this three inch thick book: very fine, sturdy cover that appears will last hundreds of years. I showcase it next to my Bible to remain mindful of the despicable, horrific torture Christians endured during the dark ages, and to pray for those souls of the tortured, and to pray that it never happens to us or our loved ones. Amen.
The story of the Anabaptists is one of incredible pain and spiritual triumph. This impressive work was written in the seventeenth century and recounts the stories of many men and women who suffered and often faced terrible death for what they thought was right. Apart from individuals stories, the book contains many emotionally touching letters written by martyrs to their families and friends. The book also describes the sufferings of some of the early Christians and the later Waldensians. The legacy of the Anabaptists lives on in the Amish and Mennonites. In fact, an article about Amish forgiveness in the aftermath of the recent tragic school shooting was one of the things that brought this book to my attention. Personally, I feel Christians of any denomination could take something useful from this book. Overall, "Martyr's Mirror" is an extremely powerful and moving book.
Purchased the historic book because some of my husbands Grandparents in the 1600's were Martyrs. EX: Hans Landis. Discovered the existence of this book on Ancestry.com, a great find!
