One never knows if an author can equal or top the first installment. Honestly, this second installment connected the dots. Each segment of the book became interwoven with different events creating significant links. There were a few surprises, entertaining humor and a few ongoing mysteries. I did not feel I was left hanging at the end. The book left me with a taste for the final installment. Once again Russell has a talent for vivid scenes slowly taking one unaware into high pitched action and an imaginative fantasy world. Ok. I hope the final installment is not a long wait. (Hint to the author)
Do you read at night and still enjoy a good nights sleep? Well still BUY THIS BOOK and just read it during the day because you will most likely not be able to put these books down. I will honestly say i picked up this book as a distraction while Rothfuss, Lawrence and Sullivan come out with their new books (looking at you Rothfuss) and maybe read an hour before I go to sleep (PhD life). NOPE! In my case (both books), I would read, confident that I was coming to a good spot to close my kindle, an all of a sudden Mr. Russel decides to hit you with a gripping twist (I literally said Holy S**t many times while reading the second book) to where you just have to continue reading! This happens often in both books, and when you combine that with excellent writing and a gripping plot, you will not want to put the book down. BUY IT!!!!!!
This book was difficult to put down! At first, I was nervous that the fast pace compared to book I would leave some other areas lacking, but to my delight, book II continues to explore the background, motivations, and minds of the characters I loved (and hated!) from book I.The best part of the series is definitely the roster of amazing characters. Cassian is somehow both someone I want to scream at and someone I want to be, while Kota is so honorable that it's heartwarming. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes stories of great struggle and triumph.Can't wait for book III! And more from the author.
Loved the political and religious views and the way it shaped the characters. Great way to keep it shrouded in mystery!
Just recently received the books. Haven’t had time to read them yet. I’m sure they will be awesome.
The book will cause you to turn the pages long into the night! Very well written with great plot twists. So good!

I am home bound and a lot. I am sick of and bored with trite, derivative, unimaginative garage being passed as heroic, Dragon, etc. fantasy in the self published realm! The copy cat deal is even worse. We have harems, Dragon riders, disposed royality, hired talents stories all sounding like every one with no originaliy! Now this story of Asango is truly different! We still have the archetypes so dear to fantasy fans but very new story telling and really fun concepts and conflicts. A bit off beat romance thrown in and we have faanyway story with all elements of great read. The starborn saga is not another bi t of derivative pulp! Read it!
